On Wednesday, July 21, 2021, from 12:00 o’clock in the press center “UA Crisis Media Center” at the address: Ukrainian House, Kiev, st. Khreshchatyk, 2 will host a public discussion on the topic: “Life sentences: Ukraine must return freedom to unjustly convicted.”
For more than one year in Ukraine, problems have been acute about the state of protection of human rights by Ukrainian courts in general and the right to a fair trial in criminal proceedings in particular. However, at the same time, it is quite rare to mention the victims of justice, whose rights have been violated by this unjust system.
We are used to rightly resent the arbitrary imprisonment of Ukrainians in Russia and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. We are used to considering the Russian judicial system and pseudo-republics’ pseudo-republics dependent and repressive. We got used to the fact that the aggressor can take hostage any of the passport holders with a trident for nothing.
However, we do not notice that in Ukraine any of us may be sentenced to long or life imprisonment for crimes that he did not commit. And – unlike the same Russia – there will be no chances to reconsider the unfair life sentence. Even if the innocence of the convicted person is obvious.
Victory Through Surrender
The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO) cannot stay away from such a painful and shameful phenomenon, the consequence of which is the crippled lives and lives of innocent citizens.
During the meeting with the G7 diplomats, the representatives of the AUCCRO, in order to actualize the problem at the highest level, familiarized foreign diplomats with the problems of innocent convicts and noted the need for specific changes to revise court decisions, regarding the fairness and impartiality of which there are reasonable doubts.
The AUCCRO made a public appeal to the President of Ukraine, as a guarantor of the observance of the Constitution of Ukraine, human and civil rights and freedoms, and to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as a single legislative body, with a request to immediately stop the worst of manifestations of lawlessness and, together with human rights defenders, will propose ways to correct judicial mistakes.
